August 6, 2008 | LISLE, IL Dupage and Quincy split a doubleheader Tuesday night in Lisle. The Dragons won the opener 2-1 in extra innings, and the Gems bounced back to take the second game 5-3.
A pair of lefties made for a solid pitcher's duel in the first, as Tom Zelasko of the Dragons and Greg Hellhake of the Gems put together strong outings to keep their teams in the game. Each allowed a single run, with Zelasko going a full seven and Hellhake lasting five and a third. With the two teams knotted at one after the regulation seven innings, Andrew Estes pitched a scoreless top of the 8th to give the Dragons a chance to pick up the win, which they did on a Jordan Tokarz RBI bloop single down the right field line. Justin Wilson had a pair of hits in contest and score on the Tokarz hit.
The Gems jumped on Dragons starter Andrew Beatty in the second game to the tune of four runs by the middle of the fourth to jump out to the early lead. Just as it appeared the Dragons would make things interesting with a three-run sixth inning rally, Jon Myers belted his league-leading 14th home run of the summer to put the nail in the coffin and Kevin Lee, who'd quelled the rally an inning before, polished things off with a perfect seventh. Myers went 3-4 with three driven in to lead the Quincy attack.
The Dragons are a game and half out of first place with 4 games to go.
The Dragons begin a three game road trip as they visit the Quincy Gems tonight for a two game series and finishing off with Springfield Sliders on Friday and returning home on Saturday, August 9th against the Danville Dans.
Tickets are available for the final home series by calling the Dragons Front office at 630-241-2255 or by going to the Dragons website www.dupagedragons.com to order tickets online.
