August 21, 2008 | LISLE, IL The Dragons wrapped up their 2008 season with the second best overall record in the CICL, but still missed the playoffs. Although there was no post- season for our players, we still managed to have 3 players win post-season awards. The 3 players were pitcher Brad Riegler, who was named co-pitcher of the year, and Phil Wunderlich and Matt Behren who were named all-stars at first base and catcher, respectively.
Riegler, a Downers Grove native and Downers Grove South alum, was named co-pitcher of the year for the 2008 season. This year Riegler finished the season ranked fourth in the CICL with an ERA of 2.04 and an overall record of 5 wins and 2 losses while being used as both a starter and a reliever. He appeared in 15 games for the Dragons this year and registered 43 strikeouts against only 12 walks. He also recorded 2 saves and 1 complete game. This fall Riegler will return to the University of Illinois Chicago for his senior year.
Phil Wunderlich was named to the post season All- Star team as a first basemen while also making appearances at third base, short stop and designated hitter throughout the year. Wunderlich hails from Woodridge and like a Riegler is a Downers Grove South alum. This past year Phil appeared in 46 of the 48 games the Dragons played. He finished the year hitting at a clip of .272 with 46 hits, 10 of them being doubles. He also tied for the team lead in homeruns with 2. He led the Dragons with 22 RBI’s while being hit by 11 pitches. Wunderlich will return to the University of Louisville for his sophomore year.
Matt Behren made the All- Star team as a catcher during the season and also for the post-season. He did make a few starts in right field but was the Dragons primary catcher for the entire season. This past season he started 41 games and hit .292 in 154 at-bats. He registered 45 hits with 11 doubles and tied with Wunderlich and two others for the team lead in homeruns with 2. Behind the dish he committed only 4 errors and had a team leading .985 fielding percentage. He will head back to Northern Illinois University this fall for his senior year.
